The advantage of this process is that it is a single-operation process that takes place at relatively low temperatures up to <strong>600 \u00b0C<\/strong>. That was a mistake. It is essentially ammonia for cooling systems according to<strong> DIN 8960<\/strong>, with a water content of up to <strong>400 ppm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Is it a little or a lot? <strong>1 ppm is 1 millionth of the content<\/strong>. If we have an atmospheric pressure of <strong>1 bar = 10<sup>5<\/sup> Pa,<\/strong> then<strong> 1 ppm = 0.1 Pa. 400 ppm<\/strong> will therefore be <strong>40 Pa<\/strong> of the partial pressure of water in the system. But to nitride or nitrocarburize, we only need <strong>4-7 Pa of partial pressure of nitrogen <\/strong>where<strong> a<sub>N<\/sub> ~ p<sub><code>N2<\/code><\/sub><\/strong> holds. The partial pressure of <strong>H<sub>2<\/sub>O<\/strong> will therefore be higher than the partial pressure of nitrogen<strong> p<sub>N2<\/sub><\/strong>. Since<strong> LPN<\/strong> takes place at a total pressure of <strong>300-400 mbar NH<sub>3<\/sub><\/strong>, we will have around <strong>160 ppm<\/strong> of water in the process, i.e. <strong>12 to 16 Pa<\/strong>. That is still too much.<\/p>\n<p>And what was the problem? It simply stopped nitriding. If we look at the equation for the nitridation number <strong>Kn<\/strong>, then we have the formula<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/obrazek1-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8463\" src=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/obrazek1-1-300x60.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"60\" srcset=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/obrazek1-1-300x60.png 300w, https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/obrazek1-1.png 608w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the hydrogen content increases, the nitriding number decreases. If we do not want to nitride, <strong>Kn<\/strong> must be close to<strong> zero<\/strong>. If we want to nitride to a solid solution of nitrogen in the alpha iron matrix <strong>\u03b1-Fe(N<sub>x<\/sub>)<\/strong>, then it must be <strong>&lt; 1<\/strong>. If we want to nitride<strong> \u03b5-Fe<sub>(2-3)<\/sub>N<sub>x<\/sub><\/strong>, then <strong>Kn<\/strong> must be <strong>&gt; 2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/obrazek9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-8492\" src=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/obrazek9-300x154.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"423\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/obrazek9-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/obrazek9-1024x524.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/obrazek9.jpg 1486w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Fig. 1<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; Dependence of the nitriding number <strong>Kn<\/strong> on the degree of ammonia dissociation<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since the system has stopped nitriding, this is a sign that the proportion of hydrogen in the equation for calculating <strong>Kn<\/strong> is increasing. And where does this hydrogen come from? Well, from water, according to the equation<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">2 * H<sub>2<\/sub>O \u2192 2 * H<sub>2<\/sub> + O<sub>2<\/sub><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If we have too much water in ammonia, we endanger both the nitriding and nitrocarburizing processes because the thermal decomposition of water will significantly reduce the nitriding number <strong>Kn<\/strong>. In addition, the oxygen released from the dissociation of water reacts with carbon to form <strong>CO<\/strong> and <strong>CO2<\/strong>, and at the same time decarburizes the steel surface.<\/p>\n<p>To eliminate this, we must get rid of the water in <strong>NH<sub>3<\/sub><\/strong>. <strong>Grade 2.8<\/strong> contains <strong>400 ppm H<sub>2<\/sub>O,<\/strong> <strong>grade 3.8<\/strong> only <strong>200 ppm H2O<\/strong> and <strong>grade 4.0<\/strong> only <strong>100 ppm H2O.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it is not only a question of the purity of ammonia, but also of the purity of the packaging, bottles or tanks.
