This sector is the biggest threat to the need for heat treatment capacities. The transition to e-mobility means that there will be no need for so many classic engines, so many gearboxes, gears, clutches, differentials. There will be a significant decrease in the need for carburizing, LPC, hardening. It is expected that it will be (-) 25 to (-) 40% of the <strong>HT<\/strong> volume by <strong>2035<\/strong>. This does not sound optimistic. To this must be added the influence of a new method of car production, through <strong>GIGA casting,<\/strong> which Elon Musk and <strong>Tesla<\/strong> came up with, where aluminum or magnesium alloys significantly replace steel elements.<\/p>\n<p>All car manufacturers are equipped with multi-chamber systems for LPC (ALD, ECM) for this sector, with a high degree of automation, robotization, and their capacities will gradually be released. This will be a problem especially for them. In the case of the continuing EU scenario with BEVs, we can expect:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phase 1 &#8211; Process rationalization (2026\u20132030)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>fewer shifts<\/li>\n<li>line consolidation<\/li>\n<li>production transfer between plants<\/li>\n<li>switching off older chambers<\/li>\n<li>outsourcing of smaller batches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Phase 2 &#8211; Closing lines (2030\u20132035)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>process of shutting down lines<\/li>\n<li>will remain in operation but only for spare parts<\/li>\n<li>sale\/lease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Phase 3: Post\u2011OEM phase (2035\u20132045)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>low volumes<\/li>\n<li>inefficient operations<\/li>\n<li>manufacturers will look for external solutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But this is the first, catastrophic scenario, with pure electromobility (<strong>BEV<\/strong>). In this case, however, the <strong>LPC<\/strong> for the powertrain drops by 70-90%. But new requirements also arise:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HT for copper and aluminum alloys (busbars, connectors)<\/li>\n<li>HT for magnetic materials (NdFeB, SmCo)<\/li>\n<li>HT for battery components (stainless steel, Al alloys)<\/li>\n<li>HT for composite support structures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The second scenario is<strong> HYBRIDS (HEV \/ PHEV)<\/strong>. But here the situation is completely opposite. A hybrid has more mechanical parts than a classic car. A hybrid has more gears, more shafts, more bearings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the combustion engine still exists<\/li>\n<li>an electric motor is added<\/li>\n<li>a planetary gearbox is added<\/li>\n<li>a clutch is added<\/li>\n<li>a reduction gear is added<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hybrid is paradoxically the best scenario for <strong>LPC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The third scenario is hydrogen drives. (<strong>Toyota, Yamaha, Kawasaki<\/strong>). Toyota claims that the hydrogen combustion engine has 80-90% of the same parts as the gasoline engine. <strong>Hydrogen engine = almost identical LPC<\/strong> needs as the gasoline engine. But in addition there will be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HT for high temperature valves<\/li>\n<li>Nitriding of valve seats<\/li>\n<li>HT for hydrogen injectors<\/li>\n<li>Coatings against hydrogen embrittlement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How will automakers decide? I think it is primarily tied to political decisions, so further developments will probably vary by territory \u2013 in the <strong>EU,<\/strong> the <strong>US, Asia<\/strong>. In the <strong>EU,<\/strong> the official strategy is still <strong>BEV<\/strong>, but the reality is more in hybrids. The realistic scenario is 50-60% hybrids.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The 2035 ban on combustion engines will change<\/li>\n<li>Germany pushes e-fuels<\/li>\n<li>Toyota pushes hybrids<\/li>\n<li>Renault and Stellantis switch to hybrid platforms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>USA \u2013 Hybrids and Hydrogen<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Toyota, Honda, Ford \u2192 Hybrids<\/li>\n<li>Cummins \u2192 Hydrogen Combustion Engines for Trucks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Asia \u2013 Hybrids and Hydrogen<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Japan: hybrids + hydrogen<\/li>\n<li>Korea: hybrids<\/li>\n<li>China: mix of BEVs + hybrids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The whole thing is summarized in the following graphic. What does this mean for LPC in automotive?<\/p>\n<p>1) <strong>BEV<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>LPC<\/strong> drop by 70\u201390%, <strong>FNC<\/strong> growth<br \/>\n2)<strong> Hybrids<\/strong> \u2192 stable to increasing <strong>LPC<\/strong><br \/>\n3) <strong>Hydrogen<\/strong> combustion engines \u2192 stable <strong>LPC, FNC<\/strong> growth<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/chatgpt-image-2-7-2026-22-39-40.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-14066\" src=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/chatgpt-image-2-7-2026-22-39-40-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/chatgpt-image-2-7-2026-22-39-40-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/chatgpt-image-2-7-2026-22-39-40-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/chatgpt-image-2-7-2026-22-39-40.png 1448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Fig. 3<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 The impact of the direction of the automotive industry on heat treatment and surface treatment volumes<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although many things are waiting for a conceptual decision, there is still the problem of <strong>GIGA casting.<\/strong> This is a fundamental change in the way a car is manufactured. But <strong>GIGA Casting = BEV<\/strong>. And that is a problem. Until recently, I thought that any engine could be put into a chassis manufactured in this way.<\/p>\n<p>It is impossible, an aluminum casting has a different vibration spectrum, is light, has low damping and has high rigidity. <strong>ICE<\/strong> generates torsional vibrations, generates harmonic shocks and needs steel reinforcements. A <strong>GIGA casting<\/strong> would crack or deform. There is another problem with a <strong>hydrogen engine<\/strong> \u2013 higher temperatures<\/p>\n<p><strong>H<\/strong><strong>\u2082 ICE has<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>higher combustion temperature<\/li>\n<li>higher NOx<\/li>\n<li>higher thermal load on the block<\/li>\n<li>higher vibration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>GIGA aluminum casting is not designed for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>thermal barrier<\/li>\n<li>exhaust temperatures<\/li>\n<li>ICE torsional loads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>ICE, hybrid or hydrogen<\/strong> engine cannot be sensibly integrated into <strong>GIGA casting<\/strong>. We have to take this into account for now. For us, each <strong>GIGA factory<\/strong> will mean a decrease in heat treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Automotive is therefore full of question marks. However, <strong>GIGA casting<\/strong> replaces:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>front frame<\/li>\n<li>rear frame.<\/li>\n<li>parts of the floor<\/li>\n<li>parts of the supporting structure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>but does not eliminate safety mechanisms such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>moving parts<\/li>\n<li>locking systems<\/li>\n<li>seat mounts<\/li>\n<li>door hinges<\/li>\n<li>airbag holders<\/li>\n<li>pillar reinforcements<\/li>\n<li>steering mechanisms<\/li>\n<li>chassis parts<\/li>\n<li>ball joints<\/li>\n<li>brake discs and segments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These parts cannot be cast as one piece because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>they must be serviceable<\/li>\n<li>they must be replaceable<\/li>\n<li>they must be assembleable<\/li>\n<li>they must absorb impact energy<\/li>\n<li>they must have different material propertiesthey must be manufactured in different variants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What does this mean?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>BEVs are expensive<\/strong> \u2192 but will get cheaper<\/li>\n<li><strong>ICEs are cheap<\/strong> \u2192 but will disappear in the EU<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hybrids are the middle<\/strong> \u2192 and will dominate<\/li>\n<li><strong>Developing markets<\/strong> (India, Africa, LatAm) \u2192 growing fast<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asia<\/strong> \u2192 massive growth of small cars<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There will be more cars worldwide, not fewer. The <strong>EU<\/strong> is an exception \u2013 but the <strong>EU is no longer the world<\/strong>. The regional reality, however, will be that 80% of cars will not be <strong>BEV<\/strong>s, and therefore <strong>ICE<\/strong> and small hybrids will dominate until at least 2035.<\/p>\n<p>The overall impact on the quenching plants can be expected, but it will not be negative. The quenching plants will not collapse, but will undergo restructuring.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global trend 2025\u20132035:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201320 %<\/strong> ICE powertrain<\/li>\n<li><strong>0 % <\/strong>common structural parts<\/li>\n<li><strong>+30 %<\/strong> high\u2011tech HT processes<\/li>\n<li><strong>+40 %<\/strong> growth outside the EU<\/li>\n<li><strong>+10 %<\/strong> growth of safety parts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This results in stagnation to slight growth (0-10%) for well-managed heat treatment operations, and a decline (-20 to -40%) for heat treaters dependent on <strong>ICE Powertrain.<\/strong> So, even though I started out very negatively, in the end, custom quenching plants just have to break free from the conventional views of the heat treatment world and be prepared to respond flexibly. Why should I invest in such an expensive device when I don\u2019t know what will happen? The answer is \u2013 precisely because of that.<\/p>\n<p>In order to be able to function in the horizon from 2035:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I have to <strong>reduce energy<\/strong> consumption<\/li>\n<li>I have to <strong>reduce emissions<\/strong> to a minimum, even better to zero<\/li>\n<li>I have to <strong>be flexible<\/strong> and I have to be able to cover any segment, not just automotive<\/li>\n<li>I have to <strong>ensure heat recovery<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>I have to <strong>robotize and automate<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>I have to ensure <strong>batch preparation and optimization<\/strong>, preferably with <strong>AI<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>I have to have a properly <strong>configured MES\/SCADA\/ERP<\/strong> level<\/li>\n<li>I have to ensure <strong>100% traceability<\/strong> of each part, I have an obligation to prove the process<\/li>\n<li>I have to be able to issue<strong> digital certificates<\/strong> for any product<\/li>\n<li>I have to be able to <strong>report emissions<\/strong> per <strong>kg<\/strong> or per <strong>piece<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>I have to be able to <strong>define costs and revenues<\/strong> per <strong>kg<\/strong> or <strong>piece<\/strong> in the ERP system<\/li>\n<li>I have to ensure <strong>predictive maintenance<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>I have to have <strong>ISO 9001,<\/strong> <strong>CQI-9<\/strong>, <strong>AMS 2750<\/strong> ready,<strong> IATF 16949<\/strong> <sup>(2)<\/sup>,<strong> ISO 20431 <sup>(3)<\/sup><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/obrazek4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13889\" src=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/obrazek4-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/obrazek4-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/obrazek4-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/obrazek4.png 1386w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Fig. 6<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 Key benefits from ECM ICBP Flex<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>2035<\/strong> heat treatment plant will be <strong>cleaner, quieter, emission-free<\/strong>, <strong>unattended<\/strong>, with full <strong>AI support<\/strong>, <strong>robotized.<\/strong> But with classic cementation, we will never get rid of emissions thanks to <strong>ENDO<\/strong>. Is that a defect? \u200b\u200bNo matter how hard we try, emissions will be \u201cl<strong>ow to no emissions<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But because every car must already have an <strong>emissions certificate<\/strong>, and internal heat treatment is carried out in <strong>LPC,<\/strong> without emissions, it is very unlikely that they would buy new parts carburized with emissions. So it is our choice. But we are mostly ready there, and unlike Defense, Nuclear or Aerospace, we can continue with what we have. But what we need to complete is<strong> ISO 27001<\/strong>, cybersecurity, and then <strong>ESG reporting<\/strong> and <strong>traceability<\/strong>. We are waiting for a digital certificate for the product that will be installed in the car.
