These are found in <strong>SAE<\/strong> or <strong>ASTM<\/strong> standards. If we want to find this data accurately, we need to go to the corresponding standards. This is exactly the case <strong>\u00a0with Ti6Al4V<\/strong> and <strong>INC718. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the target vacuum is <strong>\u2264 10<\/strong><strong>\u207b<\/strong><strong>\u00b3<\/strong><strong> mbar <\/strong>\u2192 <strong>diffuse\u00a0 is required<\/strong>. The combination of a primary vacuum pump and a Roots pump theoretically meets these conditions, but in practice it is not so certain. This is one of the reasons why the starting pressure for most non-aerospace applications starts at <strong>10-1 mbar<\/strong>. The influence of sorbence and natural contamination of the furnace usually do not allow us to do more.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is another criterion that we must take into account. <strong>AM parts need better vacuum than formed or cast parts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Rougher surface \u2192 larger surface area \u2192 more adsorbed H<\/strong><strong>\u2082O<\/strong><strong>\/O<\/strong><strong>\u2082<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Residues of baked powder \u2192 local oxidation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Open porosity \u2192 oxygen gets deeper<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Higher sensitivity to surface defects (fatigue)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Therefore, it is recommended for <strong>AM<\/strong> parts\u00a0 to <strong>have a vacuum one order of magnitude better<\/strong> than the minimum standard. The standards are therefore unambiguous: <strong>it is not possible without a diffusion vacuum pump<\/strong>. <strong>AM parts require:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>vacuum <strong>10<\/strong><strong>\u207b\u2074<\/strong><strong> and<\/strong><strong>\u00a010<\/strong><strong>\u207b\u2075<\/strong><strong> mbar<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li>pure Ar with<strong> O\u2082 &lt; 5\u201310 ppm,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Dew Point Control.<\/li>\n<li>low contamination of the furnace,<\/li>\n<li>stable temperature field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a <strong>3D printing<\/strong> is therefore not easy at all. It is not only the temperatures that matter, although they are the most significant. It also depends on the working atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, it is necessary to take into account the situation where HIP is mandatory. However, a strange problem arises with it, where even a diffusion vacuum pump will not help us with the cleanliness of the environment. If we put gas in <strong>the HIP <\/strong>at 2000 bar, our &lt;10 ppm O<sub>2<\/sub> must be multiplied by 2000x, and this will be the oxygen content of the container. It will not be the absolute amount of oxygen and water vapor that will be decisive, but again <strong>the partial pressures<\/strong>, and thebsolute <strong>pO<\/strong><strong>\u2082<\/strong> after compression will not be relevant for oxidative kinetics in <strong>HIP.<\/strong> That is why\u00a0 the standards for <strong>HIP<\/strong> only say what the inlet purity of the gas should be, but do not say anything about absolute values.<\/p>\n<p>The standards require:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>H2O + O<\/strong><strong>\u2082 <\/strong><strong>&lt; 10 ppm<\/strong> (in the gas supplied)<\/li>\n<li>dew point <strong>&lt; \u201360 \u00b0C<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Inert atmosphere, argon <strong>5.0<\/strong> or <strong>6.0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Nowhere does it address absolute ppm after compression<\/strong>. <strong>Nadcap for HIP confirms this in audit criteria <\/strong>AC7102\/6:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>requires the purity of the input gas<\/li>\n<li>requires the purity of the outlet gas<\/li>\n<li>requires calibration procedures for devices measuring impurities in gas<\/li>\n<li>considers approved procedures for gas recovery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If we follow the above criteria in <strong>HIP<\/strong>, oxidation behavior will not be a problem either. The following Table 9 is a comparison of the oxidation for <strong>Ti6Al4V <\/strong>in different types of equipment. When recycling, these impurities would gradually increase their share in the gas and the thresholds could be exceeded \u2013 something like J\u00e1ra da Cimrman&#8217;s principle about the accumulation of miners in the mine.<\/p>\n<p>But we don&#8217;t have to put up with it. Quintus offers\u00a0 the <a href=\"https:\/\/quintustechnologies.com\/products\/material-densification\/hot-isostatic-presses\/high-pressure-heat-treatment\/quintus-purus\/\">Quintus Purus\u00ae system<\/a>, which ensures the <strong>purification of recycled argon<\/strong>. I register about <strong>35 metal printers in the Czech Republic <\/strong>\u00a0. The main players on the market are about 7 companies and institutions. \u00a0Virtually none of them has a vacuum furnace with a diffusion vacuum pump. On the other hand<strong>, VSB<\/strong> and <strong>CV\u0158<\/strong> have <strong>HIP,<\/strong> but they do not have a vacuum furnace. This does not mean that they do not have access to them through one of the commercial hardening plants or a &#8220;friendly&#8221; workplace. This is the case <strong>\u00a0with One3D<\/strong> and <strong>PBS<\/strong>. However, because I am working with <strong>VSB<\/strong>, within\u00a0 the <strong>NCK<\/strong>, on the development <strong>of 3D printing from Dievar<\/strong>, it only confirms the rule that the time discrepancy between printing and post-processes is critical.\u00a0 By the time the part reaches the furnace after printing, somewhere in cooperation, it will already crack. I don&#8217;t want to be a prognosticator, but time proves me right.<\/p>\n<p>As I advocated <strong>for HIP<\/strong> 3D printing, a vacuum furnace with a diffusion pump must be in the basic equipment of anyone who wants to print <strong>OEM <\/strong>parts from <strong>Ti6Al4V<\/strong>, super alloys based on cobalt or nickel, as well as high-performance tool parts made of martensitic steels. The time aspect is absolutely critical there. A reference in the immediate vicinity can be, for example. <strong>Pankl Racing System<\/strong> from Austria.<\/p>\n<p>And the objection that I <strong>\u00a0can also do post-processing of heat treatment in the HIP<\/strong> from <strong>Quintus<\/strong>? Yes, this is possible in a certain <strong>HIP<\/strong> configuration\u00a0 , but only for development work. It is cost-in-cost for real production. If the standard <strong>HIP process <\/strong>\u00a0takes 5 to 6 hours, then the processes of hardening, precipitation hardening, dissolution annealing, etc., will be significantly longer, and therefore many times more expensive, than if they were performed in a vacuum furnace.\u00a0 It is 5 to 10 times cheaper than <strong>HIP.<\/strong> But there is another aspect. Post-processing developed in <strong>the HIP<\/strong> device\u00a0 may not be compatible with the same process in a vacuum furnace. Each device, <strong>HIP and vacuum furnace<\/strong>, is designed for a given technology, and combining them into one device may not give the same results. <strong>HIP<\/strong> has different cooling kinetics and different temperature gradients, which can lead to different results than a vacuum oven.<\/p>\n<p>And the last aspect?
