When I started at ZEZ Praha, VVZ Liberec, I was in charge of the development of PVD technologies and the Leybold device with 4 planar magnetrons was available. Their magnetic field was created from 10&#215;10 mm <strong>SmCo magnets.\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0At first glance, it looked completely normal, but at second glance, when the magnets began to peel off the base plate after some time, the problem arose. Their strength was such that it pinched our fingers.\u00a0 So it is not only a magnet, but also a life-threatening .<\/p>\n<p><strong>SmCo<\/strong> magnets offer the best ratio in terms of size, performance and resistance to high temperatures or adverse conditions. They are very resistant to <a href=\"https:\/\/cs.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Koroze\">corrosion <\/a>and therefore do not require surface treatment. They can be used for temperatures up to 250-300 C, and are more stable than <a href=\"https:\/\/cs.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neodymov%C3%BD_magnet\">neodymium magnets<\/a> (NdFeB).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/obrazek22.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10780\" src=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/obrazek22-300x122.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"122\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But how are such magnets made?<\/p>\n<p>I became interested in it only now, with the battle for the world&#8217;s reserves of rare elements. We must not only have these elements, but we must also learn to make these special magnets out of these elements. Both types of magnets will have similar process steps, but virtually everything must take place in a vacuum, due to the affinity <strong>\u00a0of Nd<\/strong> and <strong>Sm <\/strong>for oxygen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/snimek-obrazovky-2026-01-10-090809.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10776\" src=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/snimek-obrazovky-2026-01-10-090809-300x292.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What is the procedure?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Co and Sm powders are taken, they are melted in a vacuum induction melter. The blank is cast. Temperatures: approx. 1300\u20131500 \u00b0C, Atmosphere: high vacuum (10\u207b\u00b3\u201310\u207b\u2075 mbar) orultra-pure If a magnet is made up of <strong>SmCo<\/strong><strong>\u2085<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong>it is a binary alloy. The alloying will be 35% Sm, 65% Co. If the magnet is made up of <strong>Sm<\/strong><strong>\u2082<\/strong><strong>Co<\/strong><strong>\u2081\u2087<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> it will be a complex system with the addition of Cu and Fe. The chemical composition will be approximately Sm 25%, Co 60%, Fe 10-18%, Cu 3-8%. The sum must be 100.<\/li>\n<li>Now we need to make a powder with 3-10 \u03bcm grains from the casting. This is done by crushing, usually in a hydrogen atmosphere<\/li>\n<li>This is followed by Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP) to obtain maximum density and crystallographic orientation<\/li>\n<li>The next, most important step is sintering in a vacuum furnace. Temperatures:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>SmCo\u2085: <strong>~1100\u20131150 \u00b0C<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Sm\u2082Co\u2081\u2087: <strong>~1180\u20131220 \u00b0C<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Atmosphere:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>vacuum 10\u207b\u2074\u201310\u207b\u2075 mbar or pure Argon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/obrazek20.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10788\" src=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/obrazek20-278x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/snimek-obrazovky-2026-01-10-112009.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-10778\" src=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/snimek-obrazovky-2026-01-10-112009-300x233.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"383\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>5. This is followed by controlled heat treatment (aging), typical of <strong>Sm<\/strong><strong>\u2082CO\u2081\u2087<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6. The last step is machining and possibly surface treatment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/obrazek18.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10782\" src=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/obrazek18-300x174.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/obrazek21.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10784\" src=\"https:\/\/intelligent-kalam.80-240-27-133.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/obrazek21-300x130.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, the powder produced must not come into contact with oxygen. Therefore, at the outlet of the device, there must be a chamber with <strong>an ultra-pure inert atmosphere<\/strong> (Ar, exceptionally H\u2082), typically O\u2082 &lt; <strong>1\u20135 ppm and <\/strong>H\u2082O &lt; <strong>1\u20135 ppm. Otherwise, the powder produced in this way, with a huge area, may catch fire due to accelerated oxidation. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Subsequent sintering can take place in various single-chamber furnaces, but ECM Technologies can also supply equipment, they perform all operations comprehensively in one FLEX system.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if this is a challenge for the expansion of vacuum technologies in CZ and SK.
